Golden Ballet Tops Santa Anita Oaks Field

Las Virgenes Stakes winner Golden Ballet heads the field as nine 3-year-old fillies have entered for Saturday's grade I Santa Anita Oaks. The connections of Golden Ballet are hopeful that history will repeat itself as six of the last seven Las Virgenes champions have gone on to victories in Santa Anita Oaks. And the only one that didn't -- the Bobby Frankel-conditioned Keeper Hill in 1998 -- settled for a win in the Kentucky Oaks.

Spain Totes Top Weight in Santa Margarita

D. Wayne Lukas is hoping that Spain can build on her La Canada Stakes victory as a field of eight older fillies and mares have entered for the grade I Santa Margarita Handicap set for Saturday at 1 1/8 miles on the main track. Spain, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old by Thunder Gulch, was purchased as a yearling at the September 1998 Keeneland sale for $25,000 and has gone on to win of seven of 21 starts for $2,283,335 in earnings.

Champion De La Rose Euthanized

De La Rose, a champion turf filly and grade I stakes producer, was euthanized Tuesday, March 6, at Henryk de Kwiatkowski's Calumet Farm near Lexington because of the infirmities of old age. The 23-year-old mare had dropped weight and been weakened by the harsh winter, according to the farm.

TVG to Feature Coverage of Phoenix Gold Cup

TVG will feature live on-location coverage of the 46th running of the Phoenix Gold Cup, Turf Paradise's $100,000 six furlong sprint for three year olds and upward, this weekend. Coverage from the Valley of the Sun will begin at 2 pm (EST) on Saturday, March 11 with TVG racing analyst and host, Caton Bredar live from Turf Paradise. Bredar will provide interviews with trainers, jockeys, owners and track personnel as well as in-depth analysis of events leading up to, during, and after the race.

Steve Haskin, the award-winning turf writer and senior correspondent for The Blood-Horse, analyzes the horses included in Churchill Downs 2001 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2. 149 Remain Nominated to Vodafone Derby

A total of 149 horses remain in the 2001 Vodafone Derby, run at Epsom on Saturday, June 9, after the first forfeit stage. They include 32 trained in Ireland, 19 currently stabled in Dubai and six from France. The number of entries at this stage has been bettered only once in the last four years.

Dean Kutz 2001 George Woolf Award Winner

Dean Kutz is the winner of the 2001 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. Kutz becomes the 52nd winner of the award that has been presented annually since 1950 and honors the memory of one of the greatest Thoroughbred jockeys in history. Kutz, 44, will receive the award in a winner's circle ceremony on Sunday, March 25 at Santa Anita.
