Wally Dollase-trained Good Journey survived a bumping incident in the stretch drive to win the $500,000 Citation Handicap (gr. IIT) on Saturday at Hollywood Park. Under Chris McCarron, Good Journey completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.30 on "good" turf.
Mountain Rage edged favored Miesque's Approval by a head to win the $200,000 Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) on a rainy Saturday at Hollywood Park.
With rain falling at Hollywood Park Saturday and the turf course downgraded to "good," Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Val Royal was a late scratch from the $500,000 Citation Handicap (gr. IIT).
Trainer Kenneth McPeek saddled the favorite in both of Churchill Downs' stakes races for 2-year-olds Saturday but won only with Repent in the $217,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) as his Take Charge Lady finished second in the $215,200 Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) for fillies. In between those two races, Bet On Sunshine stretched out for a rare route race, winning the 1 1/16-mile allowance race by 7 1/4 lengths.
Next-to-last three furlongs from the wire, Cynthia Phipps' homebred Saarland rallied through the stretch to earn a narrow win over Nokoma in the $200,000 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct Saturday.
Dogwood Stable's Smok'n Frolic romped to a front-running 4 1/2-length win in Saturday's $200,000 Demoiselle Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct. Under John Velazquez, Smok'n Frolic completed the 1 1/8-mile test for 2-year-old fillies in 1:50.57, much faster than her male counterparts one race later.
In a move that trainer John Ward described as "perfect," Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos worked four furlongs in :52 at Keeneland on Saturday, Nov. 24.
American-bred Kurofune showed on Saturday why some Japanese racing fans are calling him a "superhorse," as the 3-year-old gray colt by French Deputy galloped to an impressive seven-length victory in the second running of the $2-million Japan Cup Dirt (Jpn-I) at Tokyo race course.
