THA Prepares 'Comprehensive' Medication Report

The Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association hopes to release a sweeping national medication and drug-testing proposal either before or during the University of Arizona Symposium on Racing, which begins Dec. 4. It would become the second major horsemen's group to issue a medication proposal this fall.

Magna Unveils Plans for Dixon Downs

More than 500 people turned out for a community meeting in Dixon, Calif., to hear Magna officials discuss their proposal for a state-of-the-art racetrack and training facility with a major-league price tag. Though they would not disclose a budget, Magna officials earlier had estimated its cost for the project at up to $150 million.

Tiznow Turns in Wild Work at Santa Anita

It took a while, but after 30 minutes of stopping, starting, wheeling, and ducking, Tiznow finally turned in a brilliant mile work in 1:35 3/5 at Santa Anita Thursday morning. Jockey Chris McCarron, who was aboard the defending Horse of the Year, timed him going seven-eighths from the three-eighths pole to a half-mile past the wire in 1:22.71, while Robbins and the clockers picked him up at the half-mile pole.

Mare Haven Loses Appeal Over Breeders' Cup Stallion Nominations

Breeders' Cup Ltd. has denied an appeal from Mare Haven Farm concerning the 2000 breeding season eligibility of the farm's stallions that were advertised as "Breeders' Cup nominated" but whose nomination fees were not paid. The decision means none of the foals of 2001 sired by Mare Haven stallions are eligible for nomination to the Breeders' Cup program.

National HBPA Hopes to Push Drug-Testing Needle

In a proactive measure, the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association issued a proposal for national drug-testing and therapeutic medication policies for substances known to affect the performance of racehorses. The organization hopes to generate dialogue in the industry before the American Association of Equine Practitioners' medication summit Dec. 4 in Arizona.

Grade I Winner Serra Lake Retired

Emory A. Hamilton's homebred Serra Lake has been retired from racing following an unplaced effort in the Oct. 6 Beldame Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park and arrived Oct. 19 at Helen Alexander's Middlebrook Farm near Lexington.

Stallions, Mares Bred Both Decline in 2001

The number of stallions and mares bred in 2001 both decreased, and Thunder Gulch became the first Thoroughbred stallion in North America to cover over 200 mares in one northern hemisphere season. Those were some of the numbers contained in the Report of Mares Bred, which was released Thursday by The Jockey Club.

Mr. Greeley's Fee Rises

Mr. Greeley, who ranks second among third-crop sires by lifetime progeny earnings, had his fee upped from $15,000 to $25,000 for the 2002 breeding season.
