Bush's Texas Replacement Called 'Friend of Racing'

Between now and the time George W. Bush is sworn in as the 43rd president of the United States next month, Lt. Gov. Rick Perry will replace Bush as Texas governor. Perry is a Texas A&M University graduate who served as the Texas Agriculture Commissioner prior to being elected lieutenant governor in 1998. He is described by Robert Spellings, a lobbyist for the Texas Thoroughbred Association, as "genuinely and generally in favor of the horse industry. He's a friend."

Compensation for Dead Horse Includes Lost Breeders' Awards

A Texas lawsuit seeking compensation for the death of a 2-year-old gelding in a van accident also broke new legal ground. After months of legal wrangling, Jim and Helen Widener of Irving, Texas, were awarded $65,000 as compensation for the death of their Texas-bred gelding I Stole the Wish in July 1998. The settlement, which included $10,000 for lost state breeders' awards, is believed to be the first time that a United States court officially recognized and placed a value on a state Thoroughbred breeding program.

Barretts Sale Includes Hirsch, Sweeney Dispersals

The complete dispersal of Ron Gomez, the estate of Clement L. Hirsch, the estate of Brian Sweeney as well as Robb Evans, receiver for TLC America, et. al. highlight the 2001 Barretts January Mixed Sale on Jan. 22-23 in the Hinds Pavilion located on the grounds of Fairplex Park in Pomona, California.

British EBF Issues 2000 Sponsorship Report

The British European Breeders' Fund (BEBF) -- one of racing's principal sponsors -- contributed a total of £520,000 in prize money during the latest flat season when over 330 races were supported. The figure is a record in recent times and, although the precise amount for next year will not be known until late February, it is likely to be exceeded in 2001.
