Champion Gourmet Girl Adds to Cee's Tizzy's Success

Tiznow isn't the only grade I-winning or millionaire offspring by Cee's Tizzy. Gourmet Girl, one of only two older females to win two grade I races on dirt in 2001, is also by the California sire. Gourmet Girl and two of her top divisional rivals, Lazy Slusan and Tranquility Lake, were 6-year-olds in 2001. All three were based in California, but Gourmet Girl and Lazy Slusan appeared to be gunning for each other, meeting four times during the first half of the year.

Mangurian Tops Breeders' List--Again

Harry T. Mangurian Jr. completed the dispersal of 99% of his breeding stock in 2000. So in 2001, his primary involvement in the Thoroughbred business was that of an interested onlooker. As he watched and tallied, nearly 600 horses bred in his name and that of his Mockingbird Farm raced, won 36 stakes races at 16 different tracks, made more than 4,500 starts, and earned approximately $16.5 million.

Our Native Dies at 31

Our Native outlived two of his very famous contemporaries, Mr. Prospector, whom he defeated in the 1973 Calumet Purse, and Secretariat, whom he followed across the finish line in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) that year. But Our Native's age and health caught up with him on Aug. 26, when the 31-year-old stallion was euthanized at High Point Farm near Lexington.

Racing Resumes in Pakistan; 60 Horses Still Hurting

There is good news and bad news surrounding Karachi Race Course near Karachi, Pakistan. Racing resumed at the track on July 28 with an abbreviated card of four races. However, 60 horses on the grounds are still in the care of representatives of Brooke Hospital, after they were abandoned when the track closed in March.
