Confirmed Marion County West Nile Cases Down

Two more horses were found to have tested positive for West Nile virus in Marion County, Fla., the week of Sept. 9, which brings the total number of confirmed cases to 16 for 2002. Last year, there were 66 cases.

Hunter Farm Latest Central Florida Property to be Sold

A portion of another historic Thoroughbred farm in central Florida has been sold. Hunter Farm, which spans more than 320 acres near Ocala and features a three-quarter-mile dirt track and one-mile turf course, has been divided up into five parcels by owner Dennis Diaz, who raced champion and 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck.

Hooper Farms Will Become Gated Equine Community

The late Fred Hooper's Hooper Farm, a farm that contributed to Marion County Florida's emergence as a preferred address for Thoroughbreds, has been sold to Ocala-based Four Star Land Holding. Plans call for the farm to be renamed the Farms at Hooper, and be divided into smaller parcels.

Florida Supreme Court Rules in OBS Case

A law allowing the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company to sell horses and operate an inter-track wagering facility was declared unconstitutional Thursday in a unanimous vote by the Florida Supreme Court. The same law had been repealed last year by the Florida State legislature.

Part of Hooper Farms Sold; Horse Use Retained

Another historic Marion-County, Fla. Farm has been added to the list of training facilities on the marketplace. A portion of Hooper Farms in Ocala was bought by a group of Ocala-based real estate agents. Greg and Carla Lord and Gary and Catherine Achtenhagen, who work for Glen Miller Realty, purchased 181-acres of the storied operation in January.

Juvenile Consignors' Group Details Progress

A general meeting of the National Association of Two-Year-Old Consignors in Ocala, Fla., Tuesday evening focused on a number of concerns, including medication, perception problems in the media, and buyer confidence.
