Slaughter Bills Advancing in Congress

A bill banning horse slaughter for human consumption was approved by the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee April 25, while the House on April 26 voted 277-137 to ban the government from selling wild horses and burros for slaughter.

Cape Town Colt Tops Third Session of OBS Spring Sale

A Cape Town colt brought $310,000 to top the third session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s spring 2-year-olds in training sale April 26. He was purchased by George Coleman and consigned by Eisaman Equine, agent.

Federal Court of Appeals Affirms Horse Slaughter Illegal in Texas

The entire 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed March 5 an earlier panel decision upholding a Texas state law that bans the sale of horsemeat for human consumption. However, Texas Rep. Sid Miller filed a bill the same day that would allow the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the state.

Replica of Derby Trophy Back on Internet Auction Site

An authentic replication of Dust Commander's 1970 Kentucky Derby (gr.I) trophy didn't receive any bids on eBay, so the owner has re-listed it. The trophy has a starting bid of $100,000, and the auction ends Feb. 12.

1970 Kentucky Derby Trophy on eBay

An authentic replication of the 1970 Kentucky Derby trophy is being offered on eBay. After Dust Commander won the race, his owner, the late Robert Lehmann, received special permission from Churchill Downs to have a duplicate made. The original was donated by his family to the Kentucky Derby Museum last year.

Horse Slaughter Ruled Illegal in Texas

A federal appeals court ruled Jan. 19 that horse slaughter is illegal in the state of Texas based on a law from 1949. If the law is enforced, it would shut down two of the three slaughter plants in the United States.

Sen. Tom Buford has introduced a bill that would ban horse slaughter for human consumption in the state of Kentucky and create a registry of those who knowingly sold horses destined for slaughter.

Barbaro Named Sportsman of the Year Candidate by SI

Barbaro, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), is a possible candidate for Sports Illustrated's 2006 Sportsman of the Year award. The winner will be announced Dec. 4 and featured in the Dec. 11 issue of the magazine.

Keeneland Surpasses 2005 Totals on Eighth Day

Monday's session of the Keeneland November mixed sale saw the sale gross surpass last year's total figure as foreign and domestic buyers kept the market strong. Totals for the eight days of selling reached $290,807,400 while gross sales for the 14-day auction in 2005 totaled $289,602,900

Fair Grounds Set to Open on Thanksgiving

Fair Grounds is set to open Thanksgiving Day, marking the return of live racing to the New Orleans track following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The meet is scheduled to run Nov.23-March 25, with 81 days of racing. The main reconstruction of the facility has been completed.

Old Frankfort Stud Sold, Relocating

Frankfort Park Land, a partnership headed by Irish bloodstock agent Brendan Gallagher, has purchased Old Frankfort Stud near Lexington, home of 1992 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Lil E. Tee. Jim Plemmons, who founded the Lexington farm in 1993, is relocating to neighboring Woodford County. The 220-acre farm sold for $3.65 million, according to public records.

Tax Equity Short on Time

The short length of the 2007 General Assembly session in Kentucky may be the biggest hurdle tax relief for the horse industry will face. Additionally, there is a gubernatorial election, and during off year sessions, tax issues must be passed with a two-thirds supermajority.

Grade II Winner Caller I. D. Dead

Grade II winner Caller I. D. died Aug. 28 of a ruptured stomach at Three Way Farm near Nashville, Ill. The 17-year-old son of Phone Trick was purchased earlier in the month by Gregory Mathis and Shirley Ness, who are the majority owners of the farm. He was scheduled to stand in 2007 for a fee of $2,000.

Clerical Error Sends Wrong Slaughter Bill To Senate

Because of a clerical error, the wrong version of a bill to end horse slaughter was delivered to the U.S. Senate. The error was discovered the week of Sept. 10, and the House of Representatives requested the bill be returned so the correct version can be sent.

Hall of Fame 2006: Jockey Bill Boland

In 1950, Bill Boland became part of Kentucky Derby history when he rode Middleground to victory and became just the second apprentice jockey to win the famed race. Only 16 at the time, he also won the Kentucky Oaks aboard Ari's Mona the day before.

Odds-On Favorites Are Good Bet in Derby

Giacomo's shocking win at 50-1 odds in the 2005 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) served as a reminder that any horse can win on Derby day. Combined with the fact that only two favored horses (Fusaichi Pegasus and Smarty Jones) have won the Derby in the past 25 years, bettors may think betting on favorites in the race is futile. However, a quick look at history shows that some favorites are almost a sure bet.

Kansas Barn Fire Kills 43 Horses

A Feb. 5 fire in a barn at Eureka Downs in Eureka, Kan., killed 43 horses and remained under investigation as of Feb. 6, officials said.
