Bertram, Elaine, and Richard Klein have retired their grade II winner De Bertie because of a bone chip in her right front ankle. Trained by Steve Flint, the 5-year-old mare was scheduled to run in the June 15 Fleur de Lis Handicap (gr. II) at Churchill Downs.
"She was a tough, hard-knocking filly," Flint said. "I don't think she was blessed with a lot of talent. I think whatever she did on the track, she did out of her heart by simply trying hard and doing everything that she could to get there."
Bred by Nicholas F. Brady, De Bertie (De Niro--Pigeon Pea, by Topsider) won nine of 24 races and earned $485,920. She captured four stakes, including the 2001 Rampart (gr. II) and Sabin (gr. III) Handicaps. Breeding plans are not yet complete.
