Trainer Richard Mandella is planning to enter two Brazilian-bred horses in the 1 1/8-mile Californian Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park June 15, Eddie Read Handicap (gr. IT) winner Redattore and recent optional claiming race winner Investor's Dream.Investor's Dream was Brazil's champion 2-year-old colt of 2001, the year in which he won the Grande Premio Juliano Martins (Brz-I) in his juvenile finale last June. In two subsequent races after turning three last July, he finished second in the Grande Premio Ipiranga (Brz-I) and 10th in the Grande Premio Jockey Club de Sao Paulo (Brz-I), both won by Roxinho. The latter race, run at a distance of just under 1 1/4 miles, was his first attempt at a race of one mile or longer. After nearly seven months off, he returned in early May to win a 1 1/16-mile turf race for Mandella at Hollywood Park. Mandella thinks the son of Spend a Buck will handle the switch to the main track."He acts like he's better on the dirt, and he won over there (Brazil) on the dirt," said Mandella.Investor's Dream won a maiden race on a muddy course while making his racing debut, then finished second in a group III stakes race on a fast dirt track before switching to turf racing.Like Investor's Dream, Redattore began his racing career in Brazil, where he won the Grande Premio Presidente da Republica -- Taca Caixa Econmoica Federal (Brz-I) and three other stakes races. Since coming to Mandella's barn, Redattore has raced primarily on turf, but he did notch a win in the San Antonio Handicap (gr. II) in his first race of 2002.Others pointing for the Californian include Bosque Redondo, Milwaukee Brew, Momentum, and Lethal Instrument.Mandella will send out a third Brazilian-bred in a stakes race that day. He is also preparing Cagney for a run in the Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap (gr. IT). Also headed for the Whittingham are Skipping, Denon, Continental Red, Ringaskiddy, Sarafan, and Night Patrol.
