Equine Spectrum, Illinois Juvenile Auction To Offer Live Internet Bidding

Buyers will be able to bid live on the Internet during the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation's sale of 2-year-olds in training on June 22 at Arlington Park. Equine Spectrum of Lexington is working with the ITBOF and auctioneer Fasig-Tipton to offer the service, which will be available on Equine Spectrum's Web site (www.equinespectrum.com). Equine Spectrum will provide live video and audio feeds from the auction to prospective bidders.

Similar technology has already been used successfully at cattle, elk, and industrial equipment auctions, according to Dan Kelliher, the executive director of Equnie Spectrum. Later this week, Equine Spectrum will have an area on its site where prospective bidders will be able to test the connection speed of their computers. According to Kelliher, the delay between the time a bid is placed on the Interent and the time that it is received by the auction company will be as little as a half-second.

Kelliher said he has spoken with three other sales "groups" that are interested in testing the technology.

"I think it's going to work great," he said.
