Thirteen Prepared to Contest Saturday's Epsom Derby

When the five day confirmation deadline passed at noon Monday, 13 horses remained in the running for Saturday's 223rd renewal of the £1,380,000 Vodafone Derby at England's Epsom Downs.

Included in the final field are three representatives from the Maktoum family's Godolphin Racing stable and three horses trained by Aidan O'Brien.

"Saturday's Vodafone Derby at Epsom Downs promises to be one of the most enthralling ever," said Andrew Cooper, director of racing at United Racecourses. "The going is still predominantly good but to prevent the ground drying out in the straight, which is the quickest part of the track, we lightly watered the last three furlongs up to the winning post this morning. We had a dry hot weekend and, in view of that and the forecast for this week, we made the decision to water. We will keep monitoring the situation and take a view each day about whether to water any more. It is lovely ground at the moment."
