Stonerside Stable's Congaree will be nominated to both the $750,000 Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs and the $500,000 Californian (gr. II) at Hollywood Park, according to trainer Bob Baffert. Both races are slated for June 15.
Congaree, a 4-year-old son of Arazi, is coming off an impressive comeback win in the Lone Star Park Handicap (gr. III) May 27, and Baffert reports he looks good. The trainer said the condition of the horse and weight assignments will determine where Congaree starts next. Last year Congaree won both the Wood Memorial (gr. I) and Swaps Stakes (gr. II) and was third in the Kentucky Derby. He is back in Baffert's barn at Churchill Downs.
The Lone Star victory was Congaree's first starts since last summer's Jim Dandy (gr. I). "He's a big, strong colt," said Pat Day, who rode Congaree for the first time at Lone Star. "He's a free runner and I was very impressed with his effort."
