Suspicious Native, whose unbeaten son Meadowlake is the sire of champion Meadow Star and 46 other stakes winners, died May 23 at Robert Courtney's Crestfield Farm near Lexington. The 30-year-old mare was buried next to Meadow Star's dam, Inreality Star, at the farm.
Bred by Ralph Wilson's Oxford Stable, Suspicious Native (Raise a Native--Be Suspicious, by Porterhouse) was bought by Courtney for Jaime S. Carrion for $70,000 at the 1979 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. During her career, Suspicious Native produced 15 foals, including additional stakes winner Leo Castelli and stakes-placed Shamrock McGroder and West Coast Native. She had been pensioned since 1994.
