Juan Avila was seriously injured Wednesday when his mount, Bubblegum Red, wheeled and flipped in the post parade of the eighth race at Bay Meadows. Avila suffered a displaced fracture of his pelvis on the left side, two broken ribs, and a small puncture in his left lung. Dr. David Seftel, track physician, said it will take about four weeks for Avila' s fractured pelvis to heal, two weeks for the ribs, and a week for his damaged lung. Avila, 27 and a native of Mexico, was preparing to make his third career start, according The Jockey Club records...The
National Steeplechase Association's summer calendar gets started early with an extensive run at Virgnia's
Colonial Downs racetrack in New Kent. The track will host five Saturdays of jump racing during beginning June 22. Two hurdle races will be part of the racing lineup on June 22 and 29, and July 6, 13 and 20. The $50,000 Zeke Ferguson Memorial Stakes (NSA-III) headlines the meet as a key prep for Saratoga on July 13.
