Author Laura Hillenbrand and her best-selling book "Seabiscuit: An American Legend" continue their winning ways.
In recent weeks, the book:
--Was named "Non-Fiction Book of the Year," by BookSense, the association of independent booksellers;
--Hit No. 1 on the New York Times paperback non-fiction bestseller list for May 18; and
--Was selected as this month's selection by the "USA Today Book Club."
As if that wasn't enough, Hillenbrand, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, continues to be involved with plans for a motion picture based on her book, accommodates numerous requests for interviews, and modeled for a Pond's cream advertisement that appeared in a recent issue of Vanity Fair magazine.
In the BookSense honor as non-fiction book of the year, Seabiscuit beat out four other popular books, including "Fast Food Nation," by Eric Schossler. Ascending to the top of the New York Times paperback non-fiction list follows the book's ranking at the top of the hardcover bestseller list for six consecutive weeks last year.
Since first being published in March 2001, more than 400,000 copies of the hardcover book have been sold. According to USA Today, there are 290,000 paperback copies in print.
Hillenbrand told USA Today that jockey Gary Stevens is being considered to play the role of 1930s jockey George "The Iceman" Woolf in the movie that is expected to be released Christmas 2003. Hillenbrand is working with Gary Ross, who is writing, directing, and producing the movie. There is also an upcoming one-hour PBS documentary on Seabiscuit.
As part of Seabiscuit being selected for USA Today's book club, the newspaper will conduct weekly online chats with Hillenbrand.More, USA Today Book Club
