War Emblem Lives Up to Pedigree (Cont.)
The following year, Sweetest Lady foaled War Emblem, and he was listed as being bred by Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons. Although bred in that name, War Emblem actually was owned by Russell Reineman. For some time, foals produced from Reineman's mares, including Sweetest Lady, have been bred in the name of Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons, who lease the mares from Reineman. Lord At War, a grandson of the great English Horse of the Year Brigadier Gerard, was bred by Peter and Diane Perkins' Haras San Francisco Del Pilar and was a champion miler in his native Argentina for the couple. Sent to the U.S. in 1984, Lord At War raced on the West Coast under the care of Charlie Whittingham and scored his major win in the 1985 Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) at 1 1/4 miles over Greinton and Gate Dancer. Lord At War ended up winning seven of 14 U.S. starts, including five other stakes. The Perkinses stood him in Central Kentucky where he developed a reputation for getting sound, durable runners. He last stood at Diane Perkins' Wimborne Farm near Paris, Ky., prior to his death in early 1998. As a broodmare sire, he is represented by 10 stakes winners. One of his daughters, Primarily, was Canada's Broodmare of the Year for 2000. War Emblem was in the Nuckols Farm consignment to the 2000 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he was bought back for Reineman for $20,000 by L.R. Springer. War Emblem raced for Reineman until The Thoroughbred Corp. paid $900,000 for a 90% interest in the colt shortly after the Illinois Derby. About a week after the race, War Emblem's 4-year-old half-sister, Pretty Gale, won the Lady Hallie Handicap at Sportsman's Park for Reineman. Sweetest Lady produced only four named foals. She died last year at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington from complications from foaling a Distorted Humor colt. The colt developed problem joints and was euthanized a month after his birth. Sweetest Lady's 2-year-old filly, My Sweet Heart, is in training with Webb Carroll in South Carolina.
