War Emblem, now aiming for a Triple Crown after this Preakness victory.
Who will challenge War Emblem in the Belmont (gr. I) and try to stop his Triple Crown bid?
Wayne Lukas said Sunday morning that Proud Citizen, who was second in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and third in the Preakness (gr. I), will show up for sure. He also did not rule out Table Limit, who was 11th in the Preakness.
Nancy Alberts, the owner, breeder, and trainer of Preakness runner-up Magic Weisner, said the Belmont was a possibility for her gelding. Before making a final decision, she wanted to see how Magic Weisner came out of the race and talk to his Preakness jockey Richard Migliore. Alberts was visited at her Laurel barn on Sunday morning by Spectacular Bid's former trainer, Bud Delp, who was recently elected to the Hall of Fame.
"He asked me why I was walking my own horse. Can't you afford to hire help? I told him that I wanted to walk him," Alberts said.
Asked in a telephone interview if she had a timetable for making up her mind about the Belmont, Alberts replied: "I'll know how he (Magic Weisner) is in three or four days."
No other trainers of Preakness runners expressed an interest in sending their horses to the Belmont. However, Harlan's Holiday's trainer, Kenny McPeek, said he was considering running Sir Barton Stakes winner Serava in the Triple Crown's third leg.
New York Racing Association officials listed the following 3-year-olds that did not start in the Preakness as possible Belmont competitors: Azillion, Essence of Dubai, Perfect Drift, One Tuff Fox, Puzzlement, Sunday Break, Tails Of The Crypt, Tracemark, Windward Passage, and Wiseman's Ferry. However, Scott Blasi, an assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, said on Sunday that Windward Passage probably would not go to New York.
