Raging Fever, Victory Ride in Shuvee

By Paul Volponi

Star fillies Raging Fever and Victory Ride will clash in the Shuvee
(gr.II) at a distance of one mile in Saturday's feature race at Belmont Park.

Edward P. Evans' Raging Fever, a winner of three of four starts
this year, including the First lady Handicap (gr. III), Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) and Bed o' Roses Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III), rides a two race winning streak into the encounter for trainer Mark Hennig.

Trainer George "Rusty" Arnold will send out G. Watts and Louise
Humphrey's Victory Ride, winner of last summer's Test (gr. I) at Saratoga. Victory Rides arrives in New York off of a solid score in her 4-year-old debut in the 7-furlong Madison at Keenland on April 10th.

Both trainers respect the talents of the other's filly. But each
is confidant in his own charge's ability.

"I think she's proven herself her whole career," said Hennig of
Raging Fever. "She's feeling good and doing super."

Arnold, whose filly has only raced on the lead in one of her five
lifetime starts, doesn't believe that Victory Ride will be in a battle
early on with the speedy Raging Fever. Yet the daughter of Seeking the Gold has run close to the early pace in the past.

"We've planned on running in the Shuvee all along." said Arnold.
"She hasn't won past seven-eighths, and this is the next step."

Speed work? On May 4th, Victory Ride went five furlongs in :57.3
breezing. It was the fastest of the 43 works clocked at the distance over Belmont Park's main track.

Cat Cay, who handed Raging Fever her lone defeat this year in the
Shirley Jones (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park with the help of torrid fractions up top, is expected from the barn of Shug McGaughey.
Two Item Limit, winner of last year's Black-Eyed Susan (gr. II), goes out for trainer Steve DiMauro. The Allen Jerkens-trained Shiny Band races in search of her first stakes victory.
