Date Posted: 5/11/2002 9:08:14 PM
Jockey James Lopez suffered a broken left hand during a spill during the fifth race at Churchill Downs Saturday. The southpaw rider was taken to Carita Medical Center for a examination and was then taken to Jewish Hospital for treatment.Lopez' mount, All Purpose, apparently clipped heels with a leading Bayou Buster at the top of the stretch, causing All Purpose to bobble and throw Lopez. A trailing horse then appeared to make contact with the fallen rider.Preliminary reports indicate Lopez may be sidelined from four to six weeks. All Purpose was not injured in the incident.
