Jockey James Lopez suffered a broken left hand during a spill during the fifth race at Churchill Downs Saturday. The southpaw rider was taken to Carita Medical Center for a examination and was then taken to Jewish Hospital for treatment.
Lopez' mount, All Purpose, apparently clipped heels with a leading Bayou Buster at the top of the stretch, causing All Purpose to bobble and throw Lopez. A trailing horse then appeared to make contact with the fallen rider.
Preliminary reports indicate Lopez may be sidelined from four to six weeks.
All Purpose was not injured in the incident.
