Palmeiro Wins; Pick Six Carryover at Hollywood Park Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Moss' Palmeiro, regarded as a Triple Crown candidate last spring, won for the third time in 16 lifetime starts. The victory was worth $33,000, raising the career earnings of the 4-year-old son of Pleasant Tap to $258,740. After second-place finishes in the Santa Catalina (gr. II) and San Rafael (gr. II) Stakes last year, Palmeiro finished fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). Trainer John Sadler decided at that stage to keep the gelding out of the Triple Crown races. He won an allowance race at Del Mar last August before beginning his losing streak. He came into Wednesday's race following a third-place finish in the Berkleley Handicap (gr. III) in March. Mysterious Cat returned $3.60 and $2.40 and Hot Market paid $3.20 to show. Total Impact, the 6-5 favorite in the allowance race for 3-year-olds and up, finished fourth in a field of six. Palmeiro ran coupled in the wagering with fifth-place finisher Jimmy Z. |
