Derby Starters Back on Track in Kentucky
The first three finishers in the Kentucky Derby--War Emblem, Proud Citizen, and Perfect Drift--returned to the track for the first time on Wednesday. All three are still in Louisville, the first two at Churchill Downs, and Perfect Drift at the Trackside training center. Trainer Bob Baffert said he couldn't keep War Emblem in the barn another day, which was his original plan. "He was pretty wild and it looks like he came out of the race in pretty good shape," said Baffert. "He's not too knocked out, so that's a really good sign for him -- and for me." The colt stood in the starting gate and jogged with a pony Wednesday morning.Other horses on the track included Harlan's Holiday (seventh in the Derby), who galloped, and U S S Tinosa, who was aimed at the Derby but didn't make the field. U S S Tinosa breezed seven furlongs in 1:25.40 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Both Harlan's Holiday and U S S Tinosa could start in the May 18 Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
