Fappiano Mare Tops First Session of Australian Broodmare Sale

Brisk trade and beautiful autumn weather combined to make the opening session of the Australian broodmare sale a great success. A large crowd was on hand to see 218 fillies and mares sell for gross receipts of $9,502,050 ($5,126,356 in U.S. funds) at an average price of $43,587 ($23,515).

Reg Inglis, the managing director of William Inglis & Son, was satisfied with the results, but indicated the best is yet to come, "The market was very strong today and it's certainly pleasing to have such a good international presence in attendance," he said. "We've got some great mares still to come and there will be plenty to look forward to over the next two days."

Five mares from a dispersal of Bill Duthy's Sharondon Park Stud in South Australia were much in demand, generating $1.14 million ($615,030). Highest-priced among them was the proven producer Veronical, purchased by prominent bloodstock agent John Freyer with a bid of $500,000 ($269,750).

Veronical, by champion sire Fappiano, is the dam of stakes-winner Lan Kwai Fong and was offered in foal to Octagonal.
