A field of 13 will take the gate for Saturday's $200,000 Humana Distaff Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs. Topping the list is the Dallas Stewart co-owned and trained filly Nasty Storm. Last fall, she cruised wire to wire in winning the Churchill Downs Distaff Handicap (gr. II). Her seasonal return resulted in a disappointing fifth-place finish April 10 in the Madison Stakes (gr. III)at Keeneland, beaten 2 3/4 lengths by top sprinter Victory Ride.
"I thought she was a little tighter, honestly, last time out," Stewart said. "Maybe she was short. I don't think she's as good now as she was last fall because it usually takes her a few races to get going. Second time back, she'll be better."
Stewart co-owns the filly with former University of Louisville basketball coach Denny Crum and three others.
The field for the Humana Distaff includes: Trip (Gary Stevens); Red N' Gold (Edgar Prado); Netherland (Jorge Chavez); Hattiesburg (Robby Albarado); Gal on the Go (Craig Perret); Sweet Nanette (Chris McCarron); Penny Marie (Kent Desormeaux); Away (Jerry Bailey); Gold Mover (John Velazquez); City Fair (Mike Smith); Spanish Glitter (Rene Douglas); Celtic Melody (Mark Guidry); and Nasty Storm (Pat Day).
