A P Valentine, who was sent to reproductive specialist Dr. Phillip McCarthy after being yanked from stallion duty at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., earlier this year, impregnated the first mare he was bred to at McCarthy's Watercress Farm near Lexington. The mare, 7-year-old Chatline, is owned by McCarthy and has been in foal for some 36 days. Chatline had foaled a Mt. Livermore colt Feb. 22.
McCarthy bred another of his mares, 8-year-old Unincorporated, to A P Valentine in late April. He plans to send about 12 more to the 4-year-old son of prominent stallion A.P. Indy.
McCarthy said he's not sure whether A P Valentine's newfound success is due to the treatment the stallion has received or to the normal nature of a stallion's sperm improving once there are more daylight hours.
A P Valentine, who was produced from the Alydar mare Twenty Eight Carat, scored his major win in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) in the fall of 2000, and a short time later, his breeding rights were bought by Ashford's parent outfit, Irish-based Coolmore Stud, for a reported $16 million. He entered stud at Ashford this year and failed to impregnate any of the mares bred to him there.
