Belterra may not run in the Kentucky Oaks. Rumors about her status swirled around the Churchill Downs backstretch Sunday morning, and trainer Carl Nafzger was vague when asked about her condition.
"She walked today, which is what she was scheduled to do, and she will gallop in the morning (Monday)," Nafzger said. "I will talk to you more about her then."
Belterra captured the Golden Rod Stakes last fall. This year, the daughter of Unbridled finished third in the Bonnie Miss Stakes at Gulfstream Park and the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland. Following the Ashland, the daughter of Unbridled underwent throat surgery because she had an entrapped epiglottis.
"Everything is great with her; everything is working fine." said Ian Wilkes, Nafzger's assistant trainer. "But she just hasn't bounced back perfectly. No decision has been made about the Oaks, but we wouldn't want to run a filly like her unless she was 110%."
