There were only four horses entered in Saturday's $216,250 San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile Handicap (gr. IIT) and they each finished just over a length apart, with Suances holding on to win the Bay Meadows feature over favored Decarchy.

Suances set a slow early pace while tracked by his three rivals. He held a 1 1/2-length lead over Decarchy after six furlongs run in 1:11.58. By the stretch call, Decarchy trailed the field while two lengths behind Suances before rallying to gain second as Suances held a one-length lead at the wire. Decarchy finished a nose ahead of third place The Tin Man, with Sarafan a head back in fourth.

Red Baron's Barn's Suances finished 10th in the Explosive Bud Handicap (gr. IIT), beaten by 4 3/4 lengths by Sarafan while racing for the first time in nearly two years. The winner of the 2000 Prix Jean Prat (Fr-I) completed Saturday's mile in 1:35.19 on the firm turf course and under David Flores. The Darrell Vienna trainee earned $110,000 for the win, his seventh in nine career race and third in a graded or group stakes race. Giles W. Pritchard-Gordon bred the 5-year-old son of Most Welcome in Great Britain.

Suances returned $9.20 and $4.20 and topped a $1 exacta worth $11.90. Decarchy paid $2.60 to place. There was no show wagering due to the short field. (Chart, Equibase)
