Trainer Philip Mitchell, who brought Running Stag to America on repeated occasions, is planning to run French-bred 4-year-old Caughnawaga in this year's renewal of the Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) on May 27 at Belmont Park. The son if Indian Ridge has won two of thirteen career races, with five second-place finishes.
"We'll come in and look at the Met Mile, but if it comes up too savage a race, then we'll look at the Brooklyn Handicap," Mitchell said.
Mitchell-trained Running Stag won the grade II, 1 1/8-mile Brooklyn in 1999. The race will be renewed this year on June 15.
Caughnawaga has raced primarily on turf, but he does have a start on Lingfield's all-weather course. In that race, the 1 1/4-mile Littlewoods Bet Direct Winter Derby, Caughnawaga finished ninth. Laissezaller finished second in the race -- he was subsequently disqualified and placed third -- then shipped to Aqueduct, where he broke down in the Wood Memorial (gr. I).
