WinStar Farm has already been inundated with 600 entries for a name-the-foal contest that was supposed to start May 2.
The Lexington breeding and training farm owned by Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner is offering a variety of prizes to the person who submits the best name for a chestnut colt by Victory Gallop out of Lady of the Lake, by Meadowlake, that was born March 1. The colt is the first foal out of Lady of the Lake. Victory Gallop, who stole a potential Triple Crown title from Real Quiet in 1998 by winning the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) stands at WinStar for $20,000.
Submissions for the "The Victory Gallop Name Game" were supposed to start May 2 when ESPN and ESPN2 are scheduled to begin airing promotions. ESPN2 will air an interview with Doug Cauthen, WinStar's president and chief executive officer, on May 3 between 7-11 a.m. The promotion will receive additional exposure through 25 Lone Star Park replay telecasts on KDFI 27 and KLDT 55 in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
"The response has been amazing," said Elisabeth Jensen, advertising and promotions manager with WinStar. "Victory Gallop has a lot more of fans than we were aware. It is really exciting."
Anyone interested can submit a name by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
or by fax to 859-873-1612. Entries must be received by June 6 and the winner will be announced June 8 during the Belmont Stakes telecast. A panel that includes trainer Elliott Walden and Bill and Susan Casner will select the winning name.
The grand prize is a trip for two to Lexington from any United States destination for three days and two nights at the Embassy Suites. The winner gets a tour of WinStar Farm, a tour and lunch at Woodford County's Labrot and Graham Distillery, a tour of Keeneland and breakfast at the track kitchen, and dinners at Roy's East High Street Diner and at The Homestead.
