Tom Bennett's Pipalong earned a 3/4-length victory over Godolphin's Sampower Star in the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup Stakes (Eng-I) Saturday at Haydock Park. Tomba was another length back in third, with 5-2 favorite Lincoln Dancer seventh in the 13-horse field. Sent off at 3-1, the win marks Pipalong's first group I conquest. The only other group win for the 4-year-old came earlier this year in the five-furlong Victor Chandler Palace House Stakes (Eng-I). Pipalong raced close to the pace through the early going before making the lead with a furlong to run in the six-furlong race. The winner completed the race in 1:15.49 while racing over heavy turf.
Pipalong finished third in her two most recent starts, the Darley July Cup (Eng-I) and the Aug. 24 Victor Chandler Nunthorpe Stakes (Eng-I). Pipalong is trained by Tim Easterby and was ridden to victory by Kevin Darley. The win improves her career mark to nine wins from 27 starts. Pipalong, a daughter of Pip's Pride—Limpopo, by Green Dancer, was bred in Ireland by Yeomanstown Stud.
