Gotham Stakes (gr. III) winner Mayakovsky drilled five furlongs in :58 1/5 Sunday at Churchill Downs as he prepares for Saturday's Derby Trial Stakes (gr. III) at the Louisville track. The work was the fastest of 21 at the distance Sunday.
"He seems to like the track," said trainer Patrick Biancone. "He worked good, but he works good all the time."
Under exercise rider Cyril Desplanques, Mayakovsky blazed through fractions of :22 1/5, :34 3/5, and :46 before galloping out six furlongs in a sharp 1:12 1/5. Michael Tabor's Mayakovsky will return to the one-turn mile of his Gotham win after finishing fourth in the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) around two turns.
"We'll go slowly, see how runs in the Derby Trial and after that we will decide what to do," Biancone said. "Everything is an option. We don't need to really decide now what we're going to do. We just need to keep him in good health and sound."
