Friday is Day of Attrition for Big A Jocks

By Dan Lauletta
Friday was a day of attrition in the Aqueduct jocks' room as Aaron Gryder was injured at the starting gate and apprentice Victor Carrero took off after the double complaining of reoccurring ankle pain.

Carrero has been back in action for less than two weeks after missing five and a half months with a broken left ankle. After riding the first two races Friday, he begged off the rest of the day complaining of pain in the surgically repaired ankle.

Gryder hobbled away after Passionate Pride roughed him up while misbehaving in the starting gate before the fifth race. Gryder returned to ride the sixth, and was off the board riding Mike's Thunder. He immediately took off the rest of the day, and was headed to see an orthopedist for a further opinion. Passionate Pride was a late scratch.

When the fifth race began, Grand V. stumbled and unseated Raul Rojas. Neither horse nor rider was injured, and the outcome of the race was not otherwise affected.
