Post positions were drawn Thursday for Sunday's $1.8 million Queen Elizabeth II Cup (HK-I) at Sha Tin, the second leg of the 2002 World Series Racing Championship. Five of the 14 horses entered in the 1 1/4-mile race have won a group I race.
Japan-based Agnes Digital drew post 13, but trainer Toshiaki Shirai would not complain about the post position.
"That is all right, the horse can take up any position and my jockey can watch from there as the others inside sort themselves out," the conditioner said.
The 5-year-old chestnut son of Crafty Prospector has won 11 of 24 career races for owner Takao Watanabe, including last year's Hong Kong Cup (HK-I), in which he defeated Godolphin's Tobougg by a head. Last time out, the 2001 Japanese champion older horse finished sixth in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I).
The other Japan-based horse in the race fared better at the post position draw. Hong Kong Mile (HK-I) winner Eishin Preston will start from stall five. The 5-year-old son of Green Dancer has won eight of 21 starts and finished fifth in his lone race of the season.
Godolphin's Grandera enters the race following a runner-up performance in the Dubai City of Gold Stakes (UAE-III) in February at Nad Al Sheba. He will be ridden by Frankie Dettori from post 10.
"That is an OK draw," said Ross Campbell, Godolphin's travelling head lad. "If he is good enough, he can win from there."
Grandera has been equipped with blinkers in his works and has been given permission to wear them in Sunday's race.
"He wears blinkers every day in Dubai," Campbell said. "We have not had this horse long and he has just had the one start for us at Nad Al Sheba, where he finished an unlucky second in a race that was run at a muddling pace. He appears well so we will see what happens."
