Meadow Star Dies as Result of Difficult Foaling

Carl Icahn's Meadow Star, the champion 2-year-old filly of 1990, died on Thursday, April 11, from complications from foaling a Fusaichi Pegasus colt. The colt died.

Owned by Carl Icahn's Foxfield, Meadow Star was a unanimous choice for an Eclipse Award after her five-length romp in the
Breeders' Cup over eventual champions Dance Smartly, Flawlessly, and Wilderness Song, and the top filly Lite Light. That season, Meadow Star equaled stakes records in the Spinaway and the Frizette Stakes and remains the shortest priced favorite in the history of the Breeders' Cup.

As a 3-year-old, Meadow Star won the first two legs of the Filly Triple Crown before finishing second in the Coaching Club Oaks to Lite Light. In a duel with Lite Light in the Mother Goose, Meadow Star won by a nose. Meadow Star retired with 11 victories in 20 starts and earnings of $1,445,740.

Icahn donated nearly $1 million of Meadow Star's earnings to the Children's Rescue Fund, a program and facility established by Icahn to house and assist homeless and underprivileged children.
