Dual grade I winner Vicar has arrived at John Phillips’ Darby Dan Farm near Lexington, where he will enter stud for $10,000 live foal. The 4-year-old son Wild Again out of Escrow Agent, by El Gran Senor has been syndicated under a “breeders only” arrangement that will establish a base of 40 selected mares in each of his first three years at stud. A limited number of nominations are available through the farm, and Phillips expects him to cover some 80 mares each season.

Grade II stakes-placed as a 2-year-old, Vicar won the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. I) and Florida Derby (gr. I) over Cat Thief at Gulfstream Park in the winter of 1999. He ran third in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), then suffered the misfortune of drawing the 17th post in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and the outside 13 post in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). He was unplaced in both classics, but “no one can take away his 2-year-old and early 3-year-old season,” said trainer Carl Nafzger.

Vicar, who was bred by John W. Meriwether and Richard F. Leahy, placed in the Jerome Handicap (gr. II) and Phoenix Breeders’ Cup Stakes in the latter half of his 3-year-old season. He failed to win in three starts this year, and was retired with four wins from 17 starts and earnings of $835,142 for owner James Tafel. Vicar will be available for inspection at the farm.
