Mr. and Mrs. Robert Slack announced grade I winner Greenwood Lake has arrived at their Stoneriggs Farm in Ocala, Fla., farm and is awaiting the 2001 breeding season. Stoneriggs bought a half-interest in the 1999 Eclipse Award runner-up from the partnership of Joseph Cornacchia, Delores Conway, and Fred DeMatteis, who campaigned the 3-year-old son of Meadowlake. Greenwood Lake, who was produced from the Dancing Champ mare Au Printemps, will stand for $6,000 live foal. Robert Slack is in the process of syndicating a portion of the shares.
Bred by Dave Bowman in partnership, Greenwood Lake defeated Chief Seattle, High Yield, and More Than Ready in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I), then won the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) after bypassing the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Earlier that year, he missed winning the Futurity Stakes (gr. I) by a neck. Greenwood Lake lost out to Anees in Eclipse Award balloting.
Greenwood Lake started twice in graded stakes at Gulfstream Park this year, but was unplaced. He was retired after suffering a hairline condylar fracture of his right front ankle and enters stud with three wins from seven starts and earnings of $430,620. Greenwood Lake is a half-brother to 1987 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Success Express (by Hold Your Peace) and Canadian champion Charlie Barley.
