As pool three of the Kentucky Derby future wager offered by Churchill Downs enters its stretch run, a pair of contenders have crept closer to early leader Johannesburg.
After day three of the four-day event, Johannesburg remains favored, but his odds have drifted up to 6-1 after opening the day at 5-1. Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Came Home and Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Harlan's Holiday (8-1) are currently second and third in the wagering.
Came Home's odds plunged following his Santa Anita Derby win. Came Home began the day at 13-1, before falling to 9-1 about a half-hour prior to his race, before closing the day at 7-1.
Came Home completed his final furlong in :13.32 Saturday and stopped the timer in a slow 1:50.02. Second-place finisher Easy Grades started the day at 40-1 before closing at 25-1 heading into Sunday's wagering.
Despite finishing fifth in the Santa Anita Derby, the odds on U S S Tinosa fell Saturday. The gray son of Foxhound opened the day listed at 45-1, was 30-1 just before post time, and closed the day at 35-1. The odds of fourth-place finisher Mayakovsky and last-place Danthebluegrassman closed the day slightly higher than their respective opening prices.
Repent, a well-beaten second in Saturday's Illinois Derby (gr. II), drifted up to 11-1 Saturday after opening at 9-1. Aventura Stakes second-place finisher Equality remained at 80-1 at Saturday's close after falling to 70-1 less than hour before he went postward at Gulfstream Park.
Johannesburg races Sunday in the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland. A winning performance by stablemate Castle Gandolfo in Saturday's Fosters-International Trial Stakes on an all-weather surface at Lingfield didn't improve his price. Castle Gandolfo was available at 50-1 as wagering began Saturday, hours after his winning performance in England. He closed the day at 60-1.
Handle through Saturday's wagering is up to $ 266,757. Wagering resumes Sunday at noon (EDT). The pool will close Sunday at 5:30 p.m. (EDT).
