Lee Lewis' Mystic Lady turned back a stretch-long challenge from Happily Unbridled to win the $75,000 Banshee Breeze Handicap on Friday at Gulfstream Park. Ridden by Eibar Coa, Mystic Lady held off Happily Unbridled by three-quarters of a length. Jostle finished another seven lengths back in third after pressing Mystic Lady through the opening fractions. Coolbythepool, Castlebrook, and New Real Deal completed the order of finish.
Mystic Lady covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.56 on a fast track and paid $3.60, $2.60, and $2.10. Happily Unbridled returned $3.40 and $2.10, and Jostle $2.20. The winning exacta combination paid $10.80.
Mystic Lady, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Thunder Gulch, has won 10 of 17 starts and earned $995,090. She is out of Diane Suzanne, a full sister of Fourstardave and Fourstars Allstar. Mystic Lady's half-sister Ethyl Mae (by Woodman) won the listed Staten Island Stakes and her half-brother Doc Martin (also by Woodman) placed second in the Queens County Handicap (gr. III).
Mystic Lady earned $45,000 for the win, her eighth career stakes win. The Banshee Breeze marks her first race as a 4-year-old and her fourth straight win. The Mark Hennig trainee completed her sophomore season with open-length romps in each of the Boiling Springs Breeders' Cup, Cotillion (gr. II), and Honey Bee (gr. III) Handicaps. The Fantasy Stakes (gr. II) winner defeated males in the Jersey Derby (gr. III) after finishing seventh in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). (Chart, Equibase
