No Action on Kentucky Gaming Legislation

The Kentucky legislature wrapped up most of its business April 2 without considering a bill that would allow the state's eight racetracks to install electronic gaming devices. Though the bill had support in the House, it never got more than a committee endorsement.

"We're disappointed at the outcome of this session," Turfway Park president Bob Elliston told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "But as we step back and look at the progress we made, we should be heartened."

For the first time, the horse racing industry was unified behind the legislation. Opposition from within the industry was scarce.

There remains an outside chance the bill could come up for discussion again should a special session be called to hammer out the state budget. Indications are that the House and Senate will not be able to agree on a spending plan when legislators return April 15 for only one day.
