Lone Star Ready to Kick Off 70-Day Session

Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, opens April 4 with an appearance by Texas native Jerry Bailey, who will ride in the $50,000 Premiere Stakes that evening. Lone Star just wrapped up its March simulcasting operation with a record handle.The one-month handle of $19,395,347 is a 6.2% jump from the $18,266,295 wagered in March 2001. The previous record was March 1999, when $18,299,387 was wagered."The trend is very encouraging heading into our live season," Lone Star president Corey Johnsen said. "It's a credit our hard working team and loyal fans. We implemented an increased direct marketing customer service effort to our frequent customers, and offered in-depth racing seminars each Saturday with expert handicappers."Wagering on Saturdays, which featured a "Handicapping for the Handicappers" seminar on the second floor of the grandstand, totaled $5,451,069 this March compared to $5,174,571 in 2001.Lone Star Park's 70-day Thoroughbred season runs through July 14. Post time is 6:35 p.m. (CDT) on weeknights, and 1:35 p.m. on weekends and holidays. On July 3, when the Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration is scheduled, post time will be 5 p.m.The feature race on opening weekend is the $100,000 Grand Prairie Turf Challenge on April 6. Paloma Parilla, winner of a division of the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park March 2, breezed six furlongs in 1:11 4/5 April 1 in preparation for the race. Paloma Parilla is by Dove Hunt, a graded stakes winner on the turf.
