Sly Kona was among the meet-end winners for Sam Houston Race Park. The 3-year-old filly was named Horse of the Meet after winning three stakes at the recently completed meet, including the Bara Lass Stakes. Steve Asmussen trains her for H.R. & Luz Robeson. She was also named champion Texas-bred and champion filly. Other winners were:Candid Glen voted turf champion of the meeting for the second year in a row; Jeremiah Jack, champion 3-year-old of the meeting; Claimer of the Meet honors went to Storm Alarm. Steve Asmussen won the leading trainer title, winning a total of 55 races this meeting. Asmussen saddled stakes winners Sly Kona, Balkan, Captain Countdown and Faxamillion. Asmussen divides his time between Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Illinois. He credits his two assistants at Sam Houston Race Park, Shawn Talbot and Tony Mathiesen, for much of the barn's success. There was a tie for leading owner of the meeting between Nelson Bunker Hunt from Dallas and Shirley Miller and Jaime Castellanos, who operate C & M Stables in Cameron, Texas. The jockey battle was the highlight of the final four days of racing with John Jacinto, Glen Murphy and Don Simington going to the wire for leading jockey honors. The winner was Jacinto, who won four races on the final card to finish the meet with 67 victories. This is the first riding title for the 25-year-old native of Peru, who will head to Lone Star Park this week...Live racing in Maryland shifts to Pimlico starting Wednesday, April 3. The headline event is the 127th running of the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) on May 18. The 11-week meet features 28 stakes races (10 graded) for purses exceeding $3.6 million. Thirteen of the added-money races, including nine of the graded stakes, happen during Preakness week, including eight on Preakness Day. Opening day features free admission, a complimentary live program and selected $1 food and beverages. Post time at Old Hilltop will be 1:10 p.m. ... A fundraiser for Chicago-area trainer Roy Houghton, who has been hospitalized at MacNeal Hospital since March 11, will be held Saturday, April 6 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Eddie Perez' "After the Races" bar located at 3638 S. Laramie Avenue in Chicago. For a $20 donation, which will be collected at the door, there will be an all-you-can-eat buffet, draft beer, music and prizes. Houghton was diagnosed with a chest aneurysm...Sportsman's Park will host a handicapping seminar on April 6 led by Steve Crist and Dave Litfin of the Daily Racing Form at 11:45 a.m.
