Favored Lord Juban made his move on the last turn and notched a 1 1/4-length victory in the $75,000 Caltech Handicap on the grass at Gulfstream Park on Sunday. Mystic Salse finished second and Fuzzy Star was third in a field of seven 3-year olds. Worldly Victor, Ricky N Chip, Kiss With Caution, and Sir Azzaro completed the order of finish.
Lord Juban, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, ran a 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.43 on a firm course and paid $5.60, $2.60, and $2.20. Mystic Salse paid $3 and $2.40. Fuzzy Star, a 15-1 shot, paid $2.80 to show.
The winner is a Florida-bred son of Lord Avie owned by Jon Stable and Gordon Racing Corp. He won his final two starts as a 2-year old and has raced in three stakes this year, finishing in the money each time. He has won three of eight starts and has earned $112,938, including the $45,000 winner's share of Sunday's purse. Timothy Ritvo trains the winner.
Total attendance for the Easter card was 8,067, according to Equibase, significantly less than the 17,256 who attended last Sunday, when the grade II Orchid Handicap was the feature race. (Chart,
