Laurel Posts Increases in Handle, Field Size at Winter Meet

Laurel Park posted gains in total handle and export handle for its winter meet that concluded Saturday.

All-sources handle totaled over $232 million an increase of seven percent over last year, according to figures released by the Maryland Jockey Club. Export handle increased to over $101 million, an 11-percent increase from last year.

The track also witnessed an increase in average field size from last year's meet. This year's average field size was 7.9, up from 7.3 a year ago.

"We are very pleased with these numbers, especially the increase in the number of runners on the racetrack and the average starters per race," said Joe De Francis, president and CEO of the Maryland Jockey Club.

Racing in Maryland resumes Wednesday when Pimlico's spring meet begins.
