Luis A. Asistio's Kalookan Queen will face males for the first time Saturday, when she goes to post for the $200,000 Potrero Grande Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita.
A 6-year-old daughter of Lost Code, Kalookan Queen has won eight of 19 career starts for trainer Bruce Headley and is a full sister of Potrero Grande winner Sir Hutch.
"I'm not a road-man," Headley said in defense of his decision to run the mare against males. "I love Santa Anita Park."
Kalookan Queen has started twice this year, winning the Santa Monica Handicap (gr. I) in January before finishing second to Above Perfection in the Las Flores Handicap (gr. III). The four-time stakes winner has finished first or second in 15 of her 19 career starts with only one career off-the-board finish.
"If you've got a good one, you gotta take good care of 'em," said Headley. "I don't have the money to go out and replace them."
Kalookan Queen will start as the 116-pound co-highweight along with Ceeband and will be coupled in the wagering with stablemate Rapidough.
One expected starter she won't have to face in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint is D'wildcat, who will ship to Keeneland for the April 14 Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes.
The field for the Potrero Grande will consist of:
1--Pie N Burger, Laffit Pincay Jr. 113
2--Romanzo, Gary Stevens, 113
3--(E)Kalookan Queen, Alex Solis, 116
4--(E)Rapidough, Tyler Baze, 111
5--Elaborate, Chris McCarron, 115
6--Alyzig, Kent Desormeaux, 113
7--Ceeband, Victor Espinoza, 116
8--Reba's Gold, Eddie Delahoussaye, 114(E) -- Denotes Luis A. Asistio entry.
