Came Home, winner of the San Vicente and San Rafael Stakes this year, worked a sharp six furlongs in 1:13 2/5 in preparation for the April 6 Santa Anita Derby.

The son of Gone West had regular rider Chris McCarron aboard, and worked, as usual, by himself. "I told Chris to go in 1:13, and I got him in 1:13 1/5," trainer Paco Gonzalez said. "He came home his final eighth in :11 4/5, then galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25 3/5 and pulled up a mile in 1:39 1/5. It was just what we were looking for."

As for the likely addition of Gotham Stakes winner Mayakovsky to the field, Gonzalez said, "I don't know if that will help us or not, but if they want to run him here, that's fine with me."

Came Home and Mayakovsky will be renewing what could be a budding rivalry, as the two colts finished one-two in last year's Hopeful Stakes, with Came Home getting the better of the less-experienced Mayakovsky.

Other prospective starters for the Santa Anita Derby include Danthebluegrassman, U S S Tinosa, Easy Grades, and Tracemark.
