Trainer Michael Matz announced the retirement of graded stakes-winning racemares Batique and Lady Dora. Six-year-old Batique, a homebred for Helen Groves who was trained early in her career by Laird George, won seven of 25 starts and earned $402,325. This year, Batique won the Honey Fox Handicap (gr. IIIT) and ran fifth in the De La Rose Handicap (gr. III), both at Gulfstream Park in January. Her earlier stakes wins came in 2001 when she took the My Charmer Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Calder Race Course and set a course record of 1:46.19 in the 1 1/8-mile Vinery Matchmaker Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Monmouth Park.
Batique (Storm Cat--Serape, by Fappiano) is booked to Rahy. The opposite cross, Storm Cat on Rahy resulted in champion Giant's Causeway.
Matz trained Lady Dora her entire career for owner F. Eugene Dixon Jr., who raced her at the end of her career in the name of Erdenheim Farm. Bred by Dan Dixon (no relation), Lady Dora (Lord At War--Doradoradora, by Runaway Groom) won four of 19 races and earned $209,081. Her big win came in the 2000 Pebbles Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park. Breeding plans are incomplete.
