Jockey Scott Seamer and two fillies took center stage at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney on Saturday. The track hosted two group I events, one worth $2.5 million, the other worth $1 million (Australian funds), and Seamer was atop both winners.
Multiple group I winner Ethereal headlined the fourth race, the $1 million BMW Stakes. The only filly in the field, Ethereal notched her win over Universal Prince by just a head. The race was contested over 2400 meters (12 furlongs). The win by the 4-year-old filly could delay her retirement and could prompt a trip to Europe for the Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-I) or the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I). According to the Sydney Sun-Herald
she could also be bred while in Europe.
Ethereal was the second choice in the race at 5-1, while Universal Prince went off at 2-1. Australian favorite Tie The Knot finished fifth in the field under jockey Shane Dye. Sheila Laxon trains the filly for P.J. and P.M. Vela. Ethereal is by Rhythm out of the Sir Tristram mare Romanee Conti.
In the feature race, the AAMI Golden Slipper for 2-year-old fillies, Seamer was again atop the winner Calaway Gal. The 8-1 shot came in a long ahead in front of Victory Vein, who was followed by 2-1 favorite Choisir. All three fillies are expected for the April 1 Lindemans Wines Sires Produce Stakes (Aust-I) at Randwick. Barry Brown trains Calaway Gal. The filly was bred in Queensland by M. Caldwell. She is by Clang out of Calais Royale (by Captain's Gold).
Also racing that weekend at Randwick is New Zealand sensation Sunline. She is among those pointed at the $2.5 million San Miguel Doncaster Handicap (Aust-I), run over 1,600 meters (one mile). Sunline finished second in the 2000 running of the Doncaster.
