Trainer David Hofmans said Friday that John and Jerry Amerman's Siphonic will be taken out of training due to "wear and tear" in his right, front ankle.

"We're going to give him a little R and R," Hofmans said. "He came out of the San Felipe with a little stiffness in his right front ankle. He X-rayed clean and scanned clean, but he must have twisted the ankle, which is probably why he didn't want to change leads. We don't want to tear him up, so we're just going to back off. We're finished, temporarily, but we'll be back in late summer or early fall."

Siphonic had been considered the early Kentucky Derby favorite in many of the polls, despite his defeat in the Santa Catalina Stakes. He came out of that race with a stiff neck, which caused him to miss several days of training. But he bounced back and was working very strongly for the San Felipe. After inheriting an early lead nearing the half-mile pole, Siphonic tired, eventually finishing third behind Medaglia d'Oro and USS Tinosa.

Last year, Siphonic established himself as one of the leading 2-year-olds in the country, winning the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity and Hollywood Futurity, and finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
