Two of Robert and Janice McNair's broodmares, Banker's Lady and Halory, died after producing foals in March. Grade I winner Banker's Lady, dam of grade II winner Banker's Gold, produced a Coronado's Quest filly March 4, but was euthanized shortly after. Halory, whose four stakes winners include grade II winner Halory Hunter, died March 14 of uterine cancer, a day after foaling a colt from the last crop of Unbridled. Both foals are on nurse mares at the McNairs' Stonerside Stable near Paris, Ky.
Eighteen-year-old Halory was one of 35 mares and 26 foals acquired by Stonerside in February of 1997 when the McNairs purchased the Elmendorf broodmare band from Jack Kent Cooke for less than $4-million.
"Without a question, the key mare in the package was Halory," recalled John Adger, racing and bloodstock manager for Stonerside. "She already had produced a grade III stakes winner and was in foal to the top stallion Seeking the Gold."
Four years after buying Halory, Stonerside scored big at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale, selling her Storm Cat colt for $6.4 million, The colt, now named Van Nistelrooy, was the highest-priced yearling of 2001.
Halory (Halo--Cold Reply, by Northern Dancer) was bred by E. P. Taylor. In addition to Halory Hunter, she produced graded stakes winners Prory, Key Lory, and Brushed Halory, plus two stakes-placed runners. Halory Hunter's big win came in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. II). Stonerside plans to retain and race Halory's yearling filly by Deputy Minister.
Stonerside bought Banker's Lady (Nijinsky II--Impetuous Gal, by Briartic) for $1.15 million from breeder/owner Edward Cox Jr. at the 1998 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. She was in foal to A.P. Indy.
A model of consistency as a racemare, Banker's Lady won eight of 10 starts. She scored three grade I wins, taking the Ladies, Top Flight, and Shuvee Handicaps on her way to $594,297 in earnings. Her best offspring, Banker's Gold, scored grade II wins in the Tom Fool Handicap and Peter Pan Stakes.
Both Halory and 17-year-old Banker's Lady were buried in their entirety at Stonerside.
