New York Daily News Ends Daily Race Coverage

The New York Daily News won't be providing daily coverage from the Saratoga Race Course meeting that starts July 18 or any of the New York Racing Association tracks going forward.

The newspaper ended its daily racing coverage July 17, in the process letting go veteran writer Jerry Bossert.

The paper does plan to continue coverage of major races and Bossert expects to cover this year’s William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) at Monmouth Park, as well as Saratoga's Whitney Invitational Handicap (gr. I), and Travers Stakes (gr. I) on an assignment basis for the paper. Those plans could change depending on Bossert’s employment opportunities.

Bossert had been covering horse racing for the New York Daily News since 1994.

In making its decision, the paper cited decreased interest in racing outside the Triple Crown season.

In June 2013, the New York Post dismissed its racing writer and two handicappers.
